Cannot create credit memo

Hi All,

We had a sales order created with the wrong pricing on it. The order was shipped and invoiced before the mistake was caught.

When we try and create a credit memo, the moment we put in the part number, an error message appears that states, "Item ABCD is not a valid item for the current application usage". The item is a finshed good and no one seems to recall the correct way to adjust the clients account with a credit.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Cannot create credit memo

Skip,

You might check Maintain Items then on the Sales tab there is a check box for Allow Returns.

Re: Cannot create credit memo

Hi John,

I did check that before posting and we do allow returns for the item in question.

Thanks,

Re: Cannot create credit memo

Another clue....if I do a lookup instead of entering the item in Enter invoices, the only 'item types' available to pick are 'service' or 'misc items'. Finished Goods are not there.

Hi

If you just want to do a credit memo to reduce the price on the invoice, you would do a description item for the adjustment of the price and enter the gl account you want to adjust.

You can't issue a credit directly for an inventory item in AR, you would do a SO Customer Return, select credit memo in AR, then  re-ship and re-invoice. Which is probably what you don't want to do.

Thank You

Re: x

Note that doing a true return will put the item back in inventory and you will need to ship it again to get inventory correct.  It might be easier just to a manual credit memo but use a non-inventory item.
