Does someone like and respect MAS?

Just curious. We switched from Quickbooks Pro 5 years ago to MAS 200. After 5 years I can only say that MAS sucks. Does anyone out there actually like MAS 200?

We have been running a $20m plus business on MAS 200 SQL for nearly ten years. Are there features that I would like, sure. Are there days that I hate something, sure. Looking back though, I know that MAS has been able to handle all of our orders, AR, inventory etc day in and day out. Am I in love -- nope,  I respect what MAS offers and it's reliablility, it works **bleep** well for us.

I have been messing with computers for nearly forty years and there isn't an operating system / application holy war that hasn't been fought. You like Quick books better -- use it and don't waste everyone's time bitching about MAS. You need help understanding how to use MAS - ask nicely, there are  a lot of folks here who are always willing to help a newbie.

gdavid, if you're going to make a post like that, please back it up with why you feel that way. Also, in my experience, comments like that typically stem from not being adequately trained.

Re: Does someone like and respect MAS?

MAS 90/200 (precisely the same user functionality, but different under the hood) requires a different mindset that Quickbooks. I've found that new MAS users who came from controllership backgrounds instantly love MAS because of its emphasis on process and accountability, and its extreme reliability in keeping accounts in balance.  Bookkeepers who came from Quickbooks took a long time to figure out that the ad hoc approach they could get away with in QB won't fly here.

If you're operation has more than ~2 people touching the system, then you need to follow processes to keep things efficient. MAS is designed to follow the actual work processes that the people dealing with customers and vendors follow. When you "grok" the inventory cycle, from po to vendor invoice with the order-pick-pack-ship-invoice, and how MAS lets you painlessly track that without actually making "accounting entries" then you appreciate MAS. If you are making any JE's (except for allocating common overhead), keeping any data in spreadsheets, entering data more than once, or involving IT in anything more than backups and desktop maintenance, then you simply aren't using the facilities available. You should also be able to close a period within two days if you're doing things correctly.

Do you and and your firm a favor and contact Brett, or another experienced MAS consultant. pay for several days of an on-site Reality Check and Tune up involving your Controller and the operations people.  Learning how to incorporate your processes into MAS 90/200 will make some very happy campers.

Why did you switch from QB, and what were you expecting from MAS?

I suspect this will be gdavid's one and only post.

Perceptive, Louie. He got his answer, just not the one he was expecting. I do hope he resolves his frustrations off line.

Re: Does someone like and respect MAS?

Well, we thought we needed to graduate from MAS 90 to Oracle E-business Suite as our business grew, and we needed to incorporate the shop floor into our ERP. That did not go well. Implementation went way off schedule, we never found the user interface to be efficient and productive in our situation, the ongoing maintenance costs were way more than we could justify, and we found the costs of implementing the manufacturing suite prohibitive. So we scrapped the whole thing.

We evaluated many different mid-range ERP solutions and concluded that MAS 200 would suit our situation best. That was in early 2008.

Sure, there are things we could do in Oracle that we cannot do in MAS (like update records with unposted batches and users logged in). But overall, we're happy.

We found it much easier to get information out of MAS than out of Oracle, and our users are much happier with the user interface -- and more productive.

Sounds like you bought MAS, tried to implement and install it yourself "to save a buck" and failed miserably.

Quickbooks is a joke unless you run a mom and pop business. IMHO, MAS200 blows Great Plains out of the water.
