Yes, I have seen postings stating that the inability to import into the merge/delete/renumber inventory utility is supposed to be fixed in the PU 2 update due out later this month or early (more likely) next month. Until then, you just have to sit tight (like I have for the past six months) and wait patiently!!!!!!!

When you delete, the IX records are created as a summary to provide a beginning balance for the years after the deletion. if you continue to delete history (without any new transactions) you will eventually delete all non-zero data for the item and the item deletion will be allowed.

Attempting to delete items using the Inventory Utility in version 4.40 SR 2.
Am getting error 12 noting the PO_PurchaseOrderDetail file in program IM_ItemWarehouse_bus.pvc.... this client has never had the PO module.
I called Support and nothing they suggested is working.

Dawn, this is a bug and I can fix it in less time than it takes to type this, but it will get more attention from the right people faster if the bug report comes from you. Perhaps Support just had a hard time duplicating the problem.
Please give them these steps to duplicate:
1) Create a new company in Company Maintenance. Give it the G/L, C/I, A/R, S/O, I/M modules. Do not give it P/O.
2) Set up each of these modules using the default options. Copy the G/L account structure from ABC to make this go faster.
3) In S/O Options, Main tab, check the Integrate with Inventory Management checkbox. This is important.
4) Go to I/M, Setup menu, Product Line maintenance, and create a new Product Line.
5) Go to I/M, Main, Item Maintenance, and create a new item assigned to the product line you just created.
6) Go to I/M, Utilities, Delete and Change Items. Enter the item you just created into the Delete grid and hit Proceed
7) Receive "Error Encountered File 'PO_PurchaseOrderDetail' not found." That's your error 12.
This occurs because IM_Warehouse_bus is mistakenly getting the value of the S/O IntegrateInventory setup option when it tries to read the P/O IntegrateInventory setup option when the P/O module does not exist. We're reusing the same variable name and not checking return values properly. Problem has existed since 4.40.

Thanks for providing that information, Luke!
We had the same error message. Fortunately we do own the PO module but we don't use it in one of our MAS companies so the PO module was never activated for that company. Activating the PO module in the problem company resolved the problem.
