With version 4.3 you can set the "Paperless" option to send a sales order and/or invoice to your customers. It gives you the option to use a contact email address, the company email address, or another address entered onto the individual SO. You can also add your own (or salesperson's) email addresses to confirm what is being sent out. These then go out from the print screen - selecting electronic delivery, either alone or in conjunction with the paper printing.
Keep in mind that this is a copy of the SO, do if you have people that start SO's with the intent of editing later, there is a danger that the electronic copy will go out before you are ready.
If you want to provide additional information, you will have to modify the SO form, or consider getting the Business Alerts module, which lets you build emails that are triggered by changes in databases. You can set business alerts to run continuously, or periodically (such as hourly, daily, weekly at a specific time.) These emails can become complex, using html, color, images, etc.
