Recently, our category assignment process seem to have broken. If I assign an item to a category, it does not appear. If I remove an item from a cateogry, it stays on the page for that category. I've tried refreshing, closing and reopening, different computers and different browsers. I ran out of places to look and began importing the production files into a back-up just to see the if the edits would pick anything up. I found some problems related to copying files, but after fixing all of that, the issue remains.
I've tried to confirm that all IT items have a "Y" in the item master (although just looking at the it category now turns this on, even if you do not want to make an assignment). All IM items with "Y" have a corresponding IT_Item record and IT_itemcategory record. All Item categories exist.
Has anyone else come across this? Any ideas where to look next?

I have images and they are appearing. The problem is I remove an item from category "AA" and place the item in category "AA-1". It stays in "AA" and doesn't show up in "AA-1".
In another case, an item is in it's proper category and appearing as it should. We assign that item to also appear in the "Specials". We assign it to that category in addition to the first, and it doesn't appear.
I have gone so far as to delete the item from the web and close inventory edit. It disappears from the web page. When I add it, it is still in the same incorrect place, even though I only add the category for the new location.
I'm about ready to initialize all the files and then import from back-ups.

Well, to add to the situation, I have an extended solution, IT-1017 that allows me to provide a sort number. It turns out that if I delete the assigned sort number, the item will disappear from the incorrect category. It does NOT appear on the correct category.
If I reenter the sort code, it returns to the incorrect location. If I enter a different code, it remains in the incorrect location.
If I take another item that has not been assigned the sort code, it won't move.
I think this is a Sage case.

Did you rebuild the actual Extended Solution files under the Extended Solutions Setup?(Modules>E-Business>Setup>Extended Solutions Setup>click the extended solution>click "Rebuild") The problem you have is the exact problem we experience with that Extended Solution. All we do to fix it is rebuild the Extended Solution files (everyone must be out of inventory files). We have to do this nearly everytime we change categories for items on the internet. Kind of a bad design for the Extended Solution, to have to rebuild the extended solution everytime you change something, but....
Hopefully rebuilding those files will work for you since that is the exact thing we do when we encounter that same problem.

Austin, I have been rebuilding that file to no avail. I even turn off the IT1017 and it doesn't help. It might be, however, that I'll have to shut down the store to do this as the store has 4 ghost users that won't go away and they are now holding several files open. I cannot process month-end without shutting down the store and I cannot rebuild inventory or CI files if the store is running. I didn't have this problem until 4.3.

well, i would say you definitely should try it when the web engine is off and the ghost users are gone... we get the "ghost" users occasionally too, and we seem to have more problems in general when they appear.
You are making me uneasy though.....we are upgrading to 4.3 ASAP, as we have been holding off for a couple bug issues, but if we upgrade and run into this, that will suck!
If it doesn't work rebuilding files after the store is closed though.....I have one last thought:
What is the release date on the version of IT-1017? You find the date on the Setup Options of the extended solution. But, we had more problems with our version when we first installed it, but then come to find out that a new version was released like 2 days after we installed ours, so we got the new version, and it worked much better. The release date on our version is 3/26/2009
