Mas 90 2.4.5
I need to get some feedback on a creative way to use inventory.
[General Concept]
Let's say we sell software. Windows XP to be specific (no jokes please), with each copy of Windows XP
having a specific license number.
When a customer buys a copy of Windows XP, they need the specific copy withe the specific license number
they picked out.
When the sale is made, the salesman picks the generic Windows XP part number. Upon picking the
generic Windows XP item, a second screen (or equivalent) displays a list of license numbers for copies of Windows XP.
This concept follows the Windows licensing model, where you sell a copy of Windows XP, but the
specific license is given to the customer, and that license is on the invoice.
[Current Concept usning 2x4's as the product]
Bar code each 2x4 with a unique part number and recieve into MAS 90.
When a 2x4 is sold, the salesman selects the specific 2x4 by it's unique part number.
After that 2x4 is sold and invoiced, the specific 2x4 will be set as inactive, and that specific 2x4 will no longer be
available to sell.
With this concept, I'm worried about having too many items accumulate in the item master and slowing MAS down.
Is it possible to purge the item master at some point to get rid of "accumulated" of part numbers which will never
be used again.
Thanks

I'd "serialize" the parts - after they're sold, that "serial number" is gone, and you get after-sale tracking.

In addition to that, if you are on 4.5, you can select the actual serial number while entering the sales order, and have that print on the order, the pick sheet / pack list, and the invoice.

The only caveat to using serial numbers would the the 15 character limitation.

I've yet to have any issues with the serial number length.

PatrickAnson, regarding the length of the serial number (or lot), if you need a longer number and haven't added your vote to the enhancement request, I encourage you to add your vote. There's currently 36 votes. You can find the existing idea on the product feedback page (link above) by searching "expand serial".

This all sounds pretty slick. The application is for Granite Slabs.
Currently we have an in-house application in vb which receives the slabs.
A db table holds [PO_Number],[Container_ID],[Bundle_ID],[Slab_ID],[
which we generate unique slab part serial number label.
eg; 4000-001-012, 4000-002-012, 4000-003-012 ...
where 4000=[Bundle_ID], 001=[Slab_ID], 012=[Slab_Total] (Number slabs in bundle)
Can Visual Integrator import into the serialized table?
If so, this might be worth testing out.

The "serial number" (4000-001-012, etc. in your example) would be imported/entered as part of the receiving process.

We're on 4.40.0.5 Extended Enterprise.
How do you select the serial number in the sales order screen?
