It really depends on how you wish to use it.
If you want to use the UPC as your main code, just use it as the item number.
If you want your own item number but want to be able to input that number and have the system automatically translate, make it a general alias.
If you only want to use it in purchase order, make it a vendor alias.
If you don't really care otherwise you could make a user-defined field for it.

The most common method is either as a general alias or to create a user-defined field. In v4.40 since the UDF would become part of the table I would go with the UDF.

Often when users want to track UPC's, its because they scan UPC barcodes pre-printed on products you receive/sell. If that's the case, I'd recommend going with the alias. That way the software will automatically "translate" the UPC code into your item number simply by scanning it at the Item Number field in MAS. If you create it as a UDF, it will be available for reference and printing, but you would need additional programming to do anything more with it.
