is there any way to black out the 1st five digits and only leave the last four of an employee's social security number for security reasons that is prointed on the payroll check stub?

Sure, Crystal Reports could do that. Create a new Formula Field. Have a code similar to this: "XXX-XX-" + RIGHT(SSN,4) and put this field on the report. This would provide you something like this: XXX-XX-6789 out of 123-45-6789.
