Just wondering if anyone has any experience yet with using the Windows 2008 R2 TS "Easy Print" driver for client printer redirection. If so, which client o/s have you seen it working with, and does it cause any problems when printing from MAS?
Thanks for any info.

Easy Print is a miracle. No more server printer driver installs for our Terminal Services (yay). Our R2 TS users on XP and Win7 have not reported any issues with printing from MAS 500.

Good news. Thank you so much!
Now, since I've just learned, based on your earlier post, that I can't actually go to R2 and will instead be stuck with 2008 because of FRx, I wonder if there were any Easy Print improvements made to R2 that I will miss out on. Off to see what I can find about that. Thanks again.

Not a problem.
You won't be missing out on Easy Print as it is part of the Windows Server 2008 family.
R2 only really improved upon "administrative" enhancements such as Hyper-V, Active Directory, DNSSEC, etc. The primary reason why I went with R2 was due to the fact that the virtual machine has 6GB of RAM and a 32-bit OS wouldn't utilize it all so I figured if I was forced with x64, might as well use R2.
If your server is going to just serve up MAS 500, I don't see a problem just sticking with 3GB and x86 OS.... unless you have lots of users.

Also, do you have remote users using the Easy Print driver, or are you working in a single-site installation? If you have users using Easy Print across a WAN, are you able to tell me something about the bandwidth between the sites? Is this a low-, medium-, or high-bandwidth connection?

We have 3 sites that use MAS 500 - NJ, WA, and HI.
The NJ location is where the servers reside so employees just use the fat clients. Our other two sites use RemoteApp via an MPLS WAN link to the main site. As far as bandwidth is concerned, there are about 10 users that use RemoteApp over a 3Mbit MPLS connection at both remote sites and they have no real latency issues when using the application. Printing is where you see the latency issues but it's not that bad considering it's going across the US and even into HI - about a 30-45sec print delay compared to the local NJ users' fat clients.

Thanks again for the info. I guess I will just have to test this after I am on 7.3. I am not planning to go to RemoteApp (at least not initially). Did you ever test Easy Print when using an ACTUAL TS login from one of your remote sites, rather than when using RemoteApp? If so, how was Easy Print printing latency in that scenario?

The RemoteApp vs Terminal Server latencies should be pretty close if not identical but I didn't do any testing between the two however so I can't be 100% - the bandwidth utlization in theory should be close because with RemoteApp and TS, the server is just broadcasting the screen video, user controls and print data.
If you've never tried RemoteApp, once you do, you will NEVER go back to TS.
It is a much cleaner experience for the user since they only see the application as if the client was installed locally. Biggest benefit is that its easier to secure the server from inadvertant changes because the user doesn't see a desktop.

Our WAN speed is half of what yours is, but we typically have less than a 5 second delay before a print job starts. We are currently using Win2003 TS and mostly WinXP clients. I would hope that I could use Win2008 WITHOUT the Easy Print feature implemented and see no increase in print latency. A 30-45 second delay won't fly with our users. What I'm interested in is whether or not the Easy Print feature will affect print latency. I may not be able to find that out until I get a 2008 pilot box in place.
As for RemoteApp, it does sound like a nice option.
The security benefit you mention would not really help me though. I have a Windows Active Directory Organizational Unit set up that I simply move my Terminal Servers into which locks them down so users can't hurt anything on the TS while logged-in to their remote desktop profiles.
One minor downside I can think of, for me, with regard to moving to TS RemoteApp is that now when a user needs help, it's very easy for me to shadow their terminal session and see their TS desktop. But if they're not actually logging-in to a remote desktop session, we would have to get used to using the Windows 7 (which users will be on by year-end) Windows Remote Assistance feature. This method is not as convenient as simply shadowing their remote deskop session on the TS.
Thanks again. This is a very useful discussion for me.![]()

After reading this thread, I doubt that Easy Print will be an option for us because most of our users are in remote offices across a T1 WAN link. I will give it a try, but I am expecting I will have to use the old-fashioned printer redirection method and won't be able to take advantage of Easy Print due to our WAN.
