When entering an item in Sales Order Entry, if the Description of that item has extended text, the Item Text Maintenance for that item pops up automatically if that field is selected.

Is there a way to prevent that from happening?

I should be able to have the field wherever I prefer it to be and not have any issues with it.  Sofware should be written with the user in mind and options enabled for these things.  A solution should never be "well just don't do it that way."  They give the ability to move fields around to customize a view, it's half-***ed if those customizations then impede a given process.

Where is this option?  When I tried it, it only affected Item Maintenance.  S/O Entry still popped the description.  I tested this on 4.4 PU5.

If I understand this suggestion correctly, that would imply that you would remove a users ability to edit item information completely.  If a roll is set up to allow a user to enter/modify items as well as enter sales orders, you cannot remove that roll's function without impacting what the user is able to do outside of a sales order entry.

I had thought about this as well but sadly it won't work for this situation.

You can turn off the pop up for the extended item description in Role Maintenance.

You don't have to move the description to the secondary grid.

6tonspacefly -- The role security setting people are referring to does not prevent editing of the information.  It just turns off the automatic popup of the extended description window.  Users can still access it manually if they want.

Brian -- Unless there's a second role setting that I don't know about, the IM security setting prevents the pop up in inventory maintenance, but not in the SO grid.  This is v4.4 update 5.  The idea link from earlier in the thread indicates that the setting did prevent the pop up in the grid in update 1.  So appranently one of the updates changed the behavior.
