Can not link Work order to AR customer after upgrading 4.05 to 4.4

It seems that the field SOCustNumber in WO1 was expanded to LEN=20 between versions 4.05 and 4.4. After migrating the data I can not link the field SOCustNumber in WO1 to AR_Customer CustomerNo because the WO1 SOCustNumber field is padded with spaces and the AR table is not.
Has anyone else come accross this??

Is the ODBC DSN set up to skip trailing spaces?
