Hotfix for this appears to be near.   They sent me some stuff to test and they appear to fix the problem.

Yeah!

 

Just installed service pack 4.50.2.0, it seems to have fixed the problem.

 

Less than 2 seconds to process the work file.

Less than 4 seconds to print a sales order from clicking print to when finished on the printer.

 

This is on new HP workstations and a 1GB network printing to a network printer.
