Payroll SDI, workman's comp, SUI, State Unemployment

In Washington State,  we have state unemployment taxes (employer only) and workman's compensation (combination employee, emploer) tax.   So we use the MAS 90 workman's comp features and state unemployment and not the SDI or SUI.

 

After having someone accidentally put a tax rate in SUI (and discovering that it's a global change, so it affected all companies) and having an amount suddenly be withheld from employee checks, I am now curious.  After looking through the tax tables, I note that most states have SUI OR State Unemployment and a few have both.  Some states have SDI and as far as I know only Washington uses workman's comp.

 

Can someone explain to me what the difference is between state unemployment and SUI (I interpret this as State Unemployment Insurance)?

 

SDI I believe to be state disability insurance (which I interpret to be essentially the same as Workmans' Comp in Washington except that WC is essentially a tax paid to the state for insurance, whereas most other states you go to an insurance company and purchase a policy to do essentially the same thing).

Sounds like everyone else is like me.

 

You're in a state that uses on or the other.   Everyone knows what to expect in their own state,  but is unfamiliar with the other piece that is used in a different state.
